Our Goal
Athletics is an intrinsic part of the total curriculum at the International School of Stavanger (ISS), spanning from primary school through the high school.
The ISS Athletic Department is committed to providing students with opportunities to participate in and enjoy sports as well as experience the benefits of teamwork, competition and self-discipline.
Extra-curricular activities are critical to student growth. Taking a well-rounded approach, the primary objective at ISS is to help student-athletes acquire and build those character skills that will help them be successful now and into their adult lives.
Specifically, ISS student-athletes:
- Develop knowledge, skills and application of a particular sport(s).
- Embrace a life-long appreciation for fitness and healthy self-concept and way of living.
- Learn and practice responsibility, cooperation and teamwork and commitment.
- Are challenged, and rewarded.
- Take on new leadership opportunities and practice good work ethics.
- Foster school spirit and pride.
Our Team and Players
The coaching staff, consisting of qualified ISS employees, strives to be positive role models for their teams. They are focused on competing well and winning, but, more importantly, developing character and ensuring a fun experience for all.
Our Athletics program is proud of the many ISS athletes who – win or lose – regularly demonstrate fair play and sportsmanship in their athletics endeavors.
Our Sports
The school offers a variety of interscholastic and recreational sports. Officially, there is an athletic activity in each of the three seasons (fall, winter, spring) including:
- Boys and girls football/soccer
- Boys rugby
- Girls volleyball
- Boys and girls basketball
- Swimming
- Track and field
Also, the school offers recreational and intramural opportunities like taekwondo, salsa and boys volleyball to ensure anyone can get involved in athletics.
Participation and inclusion are fundamental aspects of ISS and the athletics program. ISS coordinates schedules closely so students can participate in other extra-curricular activities across the school, such as drama. As for sports, every effort is made to provide athletic experiences (games, practices and tournaments) for as many students as possible. While teams are selected with a competitive spirit in mind, there is a spot for everybody in the current athletic program. All athletes can expect to receive some participation in each game.
The interscholastic athletic program adheres to the ISS Philosophy, Mission and Vision and all school policies, rules, and regulations. Student-athletes must demonstrate the following traits:
- Academic Achievement
- Accountability
- Commitment
- Communication
- Competitive Spirit
- Leadership
- Self-Discipline
- Respect
- Responsibility
- Self-Confidence
- Sportsmanship
- Teamwork
- Work Ethic
ISS’ onsite facilities include a beautiful new eleven-aside astroturf field for football games, a grass field, seven-aside astrofield, six-lane track and field, racketball court, trim/weight room and three gyms.
