The Middle School – developed for children between 11 and 13/14 years of age – is considered a bridge between the Primary School and the High School. At the International School of Stavanger (ISS), our Middle School has a vibrant, supportive and enthusiastic environment. We feel confident that your child and family will enjoy the middle school experience!
Our objective is to provide a Middle School programme that is developmentally appropriate and academically enriching. Our role is to:
- support students,
- encourage positive attitudes and relationships,
- teach students strategies and processes, and
- be there when they need help.
ISS’ Middle School is specifically designed for the unique and changing physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs of students who are progressing from childhood to adolescence. To accomplish these goals, the dedicated and highly professional teachers at ISS not only bring high levels of experience in education, but also a total commitment to the well-being of each student.
Students study a range of subjects: Art, Band, Choir, Design Technology, English, French or Spanish, Health Education, Information Technology, Mathematics, Norwegian, Orchestra, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies (History and Geography) and one exploratory period per week that is an elective. Exploratory can include classes such as movie production (watch their most recent video about being a new student at ISS), lego robotics, music composition with iPads, chemistry in the kitchen (cooking experiments) and salsa dancing. Additionally, students have daily Homeroom/Advisory.
The curriculum is integrated, challenging and exploratory with varied approaches to teaching and learning. There are also comprehensive performing arts opportunities and a wide variety of athletic competitions and extra-curricular activities.
