Community Service and Service Learning

Community service is a valued educational experience for all ISS students.

In the High School, students have discovered and developed a variety of service projects with an interest in making a positive impact in their own school community and the broader global community.

Additionally, as part of the IB curriculum, 11th and 12th graders are expected to pass the CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) programme, which requires a service commitment to the community (both locally and internationally).

Service learning and reflecting greatly benefit our students for a number of reasons. By participating, they can:

  • Learn from projects that have real life consequences.
  • Identify strengths and areas of growth in a wide variety of skills – many of which are vital for success in adult life. For example, students can improve their planning skills, work effectively in
  • a group environment, demonstrate initiative, commitment and responsibility and learn about ethical issues in our larger community.
  • Understand civic responsibility and civic involvement.
  • Develop a greater level of global, cultural and environmental awareness, which is vital for students’ future success working in an increasingly global community.

At ISS, major high school CAS projects with a strong international focus include:

Students are also actively involved in activities with an environmental theme or school focus, including a:

  • Recycling group
  • Bicycle maintenance club (students develop technical skills
  • as well as raise environmental awareness)
  • Peer tuition/tutor program
  • Primary dance program
